Engineered for emtb
electric mountain bikes are more popular than ever before, and for good reason. Whether it's enabling riders with lower mobility or satisfying riders that are shorter on time than they used to be, the proportion of emtb riders will continue to grow. Light-assist or full-power, with added weight and torque, this growing category demands more from MTB components. Race face believes mountain bike components should be designed with the experience of all riders in mind. That means committing to creating category-specific components for the emtb rider or ensuring our analogue components can stand up to the punishment of emtbs.
While many race face components such as grips, stems and pedals are approved for emtb use, others products require dedicated engineering and design to properly optimise them for the emtb rider. Specifically, our wheel and crank offerings.
Trusted to take the big(ger) hits.
Ride feel and wheel compliance are increasingly familiar topics in the realm of analog trail and all-mountain bikes, but most wheel manufacturers simply focused on strength for emtbs. We believe ride feel and wheel compliance should be a close second. We wanted to make a wheelset that was strong(er) and more impact-resistant than our standard turbine wheels while keeping the favorable ride characteristics that compliance brings. The result is our turbine emtb wheelset?-?Impressively lightweight, a superior ride feel and strong enough to take the massive hits of an aggressive e-bike rider.
Every part of the wheel?-?Rim, hub and spokes?-?Drew inspiration from the original my24 turbines and has been reinforced for full power sends.
Comfort and control, now e-optimised.
1. Rim design - the turbine emtb rim profiles follow the same design logic as the my24 turbines and the new era wheels; compliance up front, strength out back. The front turbine emtb rim is 19.8mm deep, while the rear boasts a 21mm depth to withstand larger impacts. Both rims feature our thicker anvil edge bead wall for added tire protection and strength.
2. Steel axle - our vault hubs come with 3-degree engagement and best-in-class sealing, but with the slight modification of a steel internal axle. This increases the strength and stiffness of the hub to withstand even the harshest of impacts of a full power emtb.
3. Spokes - 28 double-butted spokes in the front and 32 in the rear, secured with black brass nipples. We opted for j-bend to accommodate 32 spokes in the rear wheel for additional strength and stiffness. J-bends were used up front for user simplicity and service. The spokes are also thicker, measuring 1.7 (f) and 1.8mm (r) at their thinnest. A stout step up from 1.65mm spokes used in the my24 turbines.
The turbine emtb wheels bring comfort and control to the growing emtb category. We leveraged our proven and compliant turbine wheels, reinforcing them with more than sufficient strength. When tested against emtb alloy wheels from two of our biggest competitors, turbine emtbs are also the most impact resistant, and the lightest.
